Choosing Carpet for High Traffic Areas

Some points regarding the best carpet for high traffic areas will seem obvious. We'll want a thick, shorter, closed-loop type, such as frieze or textured. We certainly won't want a saxony plush carpet in a high traffic area, and even a berber can get matted down and show footprints. We can save all of that thick and velvety luxury carpet for the romance of the bedroom, or maybe for our little-used guest room.

Still, despite the obvious points our quest is not as simple as going to the carpet store and saying that we want the best carpet for high traffic areas. We still have some options.

First of all, the salesperson will tell us that when we select carpet for a high traffic area, this is when we need to purchase a top-of-the-line, highest-quality product (a.k.a., expensive). This advice is good and fine and responsible, and indeed we may choose this route. But there's another way of looking at it, which we will review in this article.

Perhaps if we have a really, really high traffic area, we may resign yourself to the inevitable fate that there is going to be wear and tear, no matter how highly rated the carpet we choose. In this case, we may choose to go with a cheaper brand (or even carpet remnants, if it's a small high traffic area) and install new carpet every few years. This is especially true if we know how to install the carpet ourselves and are willing to invest the time.
