Shampooing a Carpet

With a rented or purchased carpet shampooing machine, anyone can get a deep-down cleaned carpet. You will need time to do the job right, but it will be worth the effort when the carpets are clean and soft. While you should not expect to make old and soiled carpet look new, you can improve its appearance and add years to its life.

Move all furniture that can possibly be moved to an area that does not need to be cleaned. This will allow for easier mobility with the shampooer and vacuum.

Vacuum the entire carpet to remove all major debris and dirt. Be sure to go slow and cover all areas of the carpet. Also, pre-treat any severely soiled areas with carpet stain remover. This will break up the stain and allow for easier removal of the stain.

Shampoo the carpet in one direction with the carpet shampooing machine and an approved cleaner for the machine. Follow the manufacturer's directions when mixing the cleaner and putting it in the machine.

Repeat the carpet shampoo process in the opposite direction. This will ensure that the carpet is cleaned on all sides.

Allow the carpet to dry. This may take up to 24 hours.

Move the furniture back and repeat the above process for other rooms and heavily soiled areas.
