How to Clean Floors: Carpet, Wood, and Other Surfaces

All homes have floors and all floors eventually need to be cleaned, which means everyone needs to know how to clean floors.

Cleaning floors not only makes them look better but also can prolong the life of the floor by preventing damage. Even carpet can be ruined by improper or irregular cleaning. Dirt does not have to be seen to be present and problematic. A dirty floor can also harbor unwanted germs and/or pests.

The tricky thing is most homes have multiple flooring types throughout and each new surface requires a different cleaning process. How often a floor needs to be washed will vary by the lifestyle of the people who live on it. For example, people with children will need to clean their floors more often to keep their kids safe. Where as a single person may only have to clean their floors every few weeks.

This guide on how to clean floors will cover the process of cleaning some of the major types of floors including wood floors, carpeted floors, vinyl floors and tile floors. It will also include quick maintenance cleaning methods for those that need to maintain a clean floor but don't have time for a full cleaning each day.

Carpets

Carpet is a thick fabric, usually wool or nylon used to cover floors. The average carpet needs to be vacuumed once a week and deep cleaned once a year or so.

To vacuum a floor begin by checking to be sure there are no objects too big for the vacuum to suck up such as pennies. Next, find a plug in that will allow you to reach all areas of the room you are cleaning without finding a new plug in. This will save time. Next, simply vacuum the entire room first in horizontal strips and then vertical. For every day cleaning if needed you can simply vacuum the areas of the room that are exposed. On a weekly basis, you can move large items such as furniture and vacuum beneath them. Homes with small children may want to use a broom or stick vacuum periodically throughout the day. These are small, lower power vacuums that work well for spot cleaning.
