How to Keep Your Shag Carpet and Rugs Looking New

Just like any other carpeting, shag carpets and rugs need regular cleaning to remove the build up of dirt and grime that can reduce the life of the carpet. Smaller area rugs without the rubber backing can be thrown in the washing machine and washed using a cold water, gentle cycle. To dry, simply toss in the dryer for about 2-3 minutes, and then drape over the clothes line or a towel bar to dry overnight.

Large rugs and carpet will need to be cleaned using carpet shampooers. If you use a home shampooer, the carpet should be cleaned at least once every three months. And just like with vacuuming, it takes two runs of the shampooer coming in from opposite directions to restore the pile.

If you don't own a shampooer of your own, a commercial machine can be leased from grocery and home improvement stores. These machines are much more powerful than a home version and are able to clean deeper into the pile. Twice a year cleaning with a commercial shampooer is usually adequate, unless you have lots of kids and pets.

Rotating the rugs and the furniture

Traffic patterns and furniture will eventually mat down the pile of your rugs and carpet which is why it's also recommended to rotate your furniture and rugs. To restore the pile beneath a piece of furniture, a small whisk broom and hand held potting rake will help return the spring to your shag carpeting.
