How to Make Inexpensive Carpet Freshener

The cost of cleaning supplies add up quickly, particularly in today's stressed economy. Many people feel that they have no alternative to paying high prices for cleaning supplies, fortunately that is not the case. Many cleaning supplies can be made both easily and inexpensively with ingredients you probably already have on hand. One such easy to make cleaning supply is carpet freshener.

I developed the following recipe after I discovered I had just run out of Arm and Hammer baking soda carpet freshener. I had guests that would be arriving soon and my carpet was in definite need of freshening. So I took a look at my empty container of commercial stuff and saw that the main ingredient, which was responsible for deodorizing the carpet was baking soda. So I began developing the recipe by sprinkling plain baking soda on my carpet and then waiting several minutes before vacuuming it up.

The baking soda was good at deodorizing my carpet but I still missed the pleasant fragrance found in commercial brands of carpet freshener. As time went on I developed a recipe that results in a great carpet deodorizer that is easy to customize for both your cleaning needs and your scent preferences.

You will need the following tools and containers to make the recipe: Rubbermaid or other brand plastic shoebox size container (I have children so I vacuum a lot if you do not have a lot of traffic on your carpet feel free to halve or even quarter the recipe and store it in a smaller container) with a tight fitting lid; a large wooden spoon for stirring and a measuring cup.

You will also need the following ingredients to make the recipe: (9) 1 lb. boxes of baking soda (feel free to use generic baking soda it works just as well as the more expensive name brand kinds); 2 cups of cornstarch. Optional ingredients for scenting: 2 cups scented talcum powder; dried flowers such as rose or lavender and / or citrus fruit peels such as orange or lemon; some of your favorite essential or fragrance oils.

Natural Carpet Cleaners and Deodorizers

All of your carpet cleaners and deodorizers can be made by common household products. This is a great way to both remove the unhealthy chemicals from your home, but also save quite a bit of money.

CARPET SPOT REMOVERS:
RECIPE 1:
Mix white vinegar and baking soda into a paste. Work the paste into the stain with an old tooth brush. When dry, vacuum up baking soda. Depending on the stain, this process may need to done twice.

RECIPE 2:
Soak spot immediately in club soda and blot until spot is gone.

RECIPE 3:
To remove grease spots, blot up as much liquid as possible then rub a liberal amount of baking soda or corn starch on the spot. Let sit overnight then vacuum in the morning.

CARPET DEODORIZER / FRESHENERS:

RECIPE 1:
Sprinkle baking soda on carpet, leave on 15 minutes or longer, then vacuum as usual. This will naturally remove pet and other odors from your carpet.

RECIPE 2:
For a fragrant carpet freshener, combine 4 cups baking soda, 35 drops Eucalyptus essential oil, 30 drops Lavender essential oil, and 25 drops Rosewood essential oil (or any combination of essential oils), mix in a bowl breaking up any clumps to disperse the essential oils. Sprinkle mixture on carpet and let sit for at least 15 minutes before vacuuming.

CARPET STEAM CLEANER SOLUTION:

Fill the carpet cleaner with a mixture containing equal parts of white vinegar and warm water, then clean according to the manufacturer's instructions.

CARPET CLEANER FOR PET ACCIDENTS:

First blot area, then add a solution of white vinegar and water. Blot again until almost dry. Sprinkle baking soda over the area then let dry completely. Vacuum up the baking soda residue the next day.

INDOOR / OUTDOOR CARPET CLEANER:

Mix a solution of 1 cup of white vinegar in 1 bucket of warm water. Scrub carpet with a brush or broom then hose off.

Green Way to Rid Your Carpet of Fleas

When you buy a new house there are certain things you might not discover until later. For example, the house might look perfect but you find out your neighbor certainly isn't. Or, you move in only to discover that the previous owner hid from you the fact that there is a plumbing problem. There's only so much you can tell from a house by looking at it. Other things you just realize later. One such thing is a flea problem. Merely walking through an empty house doesn't mean that you'll notice a flea problem immediately.

Yes, you can forget about the former owner or real estate person telling you about the fleas; it's their little secret. It's disheartening when you find out that your new house has a flea problem but don't run to the nearest store to purchase many cans of flea bombs. That's expensive and will leave every surface of your home covered in dangerous chemicals. Even flea sprays - though you can at least decide what surfaces will get the chemicals - are still dangerous. Instead, use a replacement treatment that you probably already have on hand: salt!

Salt not only repels fleas but it also kills them. It has an effect something like what salt has on slugs. Ordinary table salt works great to get rid of the fleas but you'll need quite a bit of it. Sprinkle the salt on the floor as you would carpet deodorizer. Apply it heavily, making sure to get all the corners, and ensuring that you apply it around the perimeter. If you have more than one carpet do all of them at the same time.

After the salt has been applied it's just a matter of waiting until it can do its work. Leave the salt in place for about an hour then you can vacuum the carpets - and the dead fleas. It's a good idea to do the salt treatment again, a few days later, just to ensure that none of them escaped the salt as it was applied the first time.
