The Differences Between Upright and Cylinder Vacuum Cleaners

Some companies (Dyson, Electrolux, Samsung and Hoover for example) are known for both their upright and cylinder vacuum cleaners, whereas some companies, such as Miele, are known almost exclusively for manufacturing cylinders. The choice between upright and cylinder is largely a matter of personal choice, but there are some obvious differences.

Convenience of Use

Upright vacuum cleaners are often able to clean on multi surfaces with the simple flick of a switch to turn off the beater bar (Dyson DC25 Multifloor and the Samsung VCU8860 Flexiclean for example). Cylinder cleaners often need a change of head to accomplish the same (Dyson DC32 Animal), although sometimes it is as simply achieved as a foot button on the head (Miele). Even so, generally speaking, uprights are easier for a home with hard and carpeted floors side by side.

Manoeuvrability

Cylinder cleaners have the edge here, as a rule, the exception being the Dyson uprights with the ball technology, which makes them easy to steer around furniture. Even so, they are no compact enough to get under beds and low furniture and this is where the cylinders, with the head on a wand, really come into their own, as they will lie flat and can get into spaces only a few inches high. Also, the tool are fitted straight onto the wand, without the need to remove any tubing or refit the vacuum cleaner. Cylinders really win on this point.
