How to Restore Pet Damaged Carpet

As an owner of several pets I have come to understand that even the best pets who you think are 100% trained will have the occasional mishap in the house. Many times this oops is not even found until quite a while after the accident. When this happens the stain can cause damage to the carpet. Here are a few tips that can help you save your carpet and restore it to something close to it's original state.

Step #1: Blot the area as soon as it is discovered to soak up any wetness that still exist.

Step #2: Mix together ¼ of a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid soap. Soak the stain with the mixture and wait 2-3 minutes.

Step #3: Blot the area on the carpet with a paper towel. If the spot improves repeat the process several times.

Step #4: Once you stop noticing an improvement in the carpet or stop noticing a yellow discoloration in the paper towel take a mixture of 2 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar and pour it on the stain. Blot the area dry with several paper towels.

Optional step

Please several paper towels over the area and step on it to help speed up the drying process. This can be repeated several times.

The urine of a pet can not only cause an odor but also cause damage to the carpet fibers and the overall make up of the carpet. You may also notice a change in the color of the carpet where there has been urine. This happens because of the strength of the urine.

If you opt to have your carpets replaced there are several things you need to know. Just replacing the carpet will not be enough. You should also replace the padding along with possibly replacing the subfloor or sealing the subfloor. If you only replace the carpet the pet will be able to still smell the urine that is trapped in the old padding or on the subfloor. This could cause them to want to "mark" their territory. Also ask your carpet dealer if they offer carpet that has the special backing that resist stains and spilling from going down into the padding. This is ideal for those who may have to replace their carpet again down the road.
