How to Get Rid of a Urine Smell on a Bathroom Floor

Bathroom odors aren't something people usually discuss, but it can be a serious problem, especially when urine on a bathroom floor can no longer be ignored. The smell can be overwhelming, and it's sometimes difficult to get rid of, especially with ordinary floor cleaner. Accidents happen, and simply washing the floor isn't always enough to get rid of the odor.

It is possible to get rid of a urine smell on a bathroom floor and keep the smell from becoming an ongoing problem. At one time I had three boys living in my home as well as my husband, and the following cleaning method worked for me. If your bathroom has taken on the unmistakable and unpleasant smell of urine, give these ideas a try and give your bathroom floor a fresh start.

Start With a Thorough Cleaning

If a floor isn't thoroughly clean, no amount of commercial products will get rid of the smell of urine on a bathroom floor. More than likely traces of urine have seeped into the wood beneath linoleum or into grout between tiles, and simply wiping the surface just isn't enough. I used to work in a daycare center, and when I began my job, the boy's bathroom had an overwhelming smell of urine. Simply mopping the floor didn't get rid of the smell.

To get rid of a urine smell on a bathroom floor, begin by thoroughly cleaning the entire floor with vinegar and water. Add approximately ½ cup of white vinegar for every gallon of warm water, and allow it to saturate the floor for several seconds before wiping it away. Vinegar is a natural odor remover, and it does a fantastic job of cleaning and removing stains and unpleasant odors.

Air Freshener Isn't the Answer

Many people turn to air fresheners in an attempt to get rid of the smell of urine on a bathroom floor, but air freshener isn't the answer. Sure, it will freshen the air, but if the bathroom smells like urine, after spaying air freshener it will smell like urine and whatever scent you've added to the air. There's nothing quite like the smell of pumpkin spice and urine, and believe me, it won't make a difference, and it definitely won't get rid of the smell.
