Cost-Effective Tips for Preserving Your Carpets, Rugs

Today's economy requires buyers to not only be more frugal with their purchases but also be more aware of how they treat their products; this is particularly true for carpets and rugs. If you, the consumer, take care of a good carpet or rug, it will reward you with years of service and longevity. Here are a few helpful hints on cost-effective methods of preserving your rug without compromising the quality of its condition.

A great way to preserve the condition of your rug is to turn areas of the rugs periodically so that they wear evenly. The carpet's aging will distribute equally throughout the entire material and will look better in the long run. The fabric also will have a tendency to unravel as time moves on. In order to avoid this, brush the carpet edges and seams with a liquid resin (which can be found at fabric and craft stores) to lock the yarns in place. This will keep the carpet looking new for years to come.

It is important to keep the carpet looking new as well as preventing it from wearing out. A great way to do this is to sew bias binding tape around the edge of a braided rug as to protect the edges from wearing out. Another great technique to keep the rug from unnecessary wear and tear is to remove the indentations in carpets caused by furniture by steaming them with an iron. By letting the steam penetrate to dampen the fibers, this prevents the indentations from permanently causing damage to the fibers. After letting the steam penetrate through, use your fingers to fluff the material.
