The splendour of handmade carpets

THESE magnificent pieces of handmade carpets are works of art.

And you can buy them at Shahadat Carpets at the Tropicana Shopping Arcade in Petaling Jaya.

Shahadat Carpets is owned by the affable Shahadat Ali who has managed the outlet since 1992.

How can you tell good quality handmade carpets from inferior ones?

"From the knots on the reverse of the carpet," says Shahadat.

"If there are between 100 to 300 knots per square inch, then the carpet is of good quality, and if there are between 300 to 1,000 knots per square inch, then it is considered fine quality.

"The thinner the carpet, the richer is the man who possesses it."

Shahadat says …
