FROM CLEANING TO SALES ; Carpet cleaner, retailer marks 30th anniversary with Milton showroom

Jay Kennedy started his carpet cleaning business 30 years ago with 100,000 fliers and a machine he built in his mother's driveway using tubes and two lawnmower motors.

Today, the 54-year-old Norwell resident's Kennedy Carpets employs 75 people, after having expanded from cleaning carpets 12 years ago to selling them as well. Last year, his company's revenue from carpet sales for the first time outpaced that of his carpet cleaning division. He also has a carpet restoration division.

Kennedy is celebrating his Weymouth company's 30th anniversary this year by building a 4,500-square foot retail carpet showroom on Granite …
