Travel Guide for Eureka, California

Want to visit one of the only places in California with picturesque natural beauty and temperate weather? Then Eureka is your best bet. It is located in the heart of a region flush with forests, hills and over 100 miles of coastline. Eureka is the biggest city around at 40,000 people and still has that small town feel. San Francisco is over five hours south and Portland is over seven hours to the north.

The Old Town area of Eureka contains over 10,000 Victorian-style houses, the most prestigious being the Carson Mansion, which is a sight to behold, especially around the holidays. The downtown district is a pleasant mix of coffee houses, quaint shops and waterfront with cobblestone streets, great for leisurely walking. The first Saturday of each month, Old Town sponsors an "Arts Alive!" event. Live music and performances fill the area with entertaining sights and sounds. Many restaurants

On the outskirts of town, there's the Humboldt Bay - a great spot for boats, canoes and kayaks. There are over 370 species of birds in the area, so watching from the water can be ideal. If you're in town for the night, there's are numerous restaurants to choose from - little whole in the wall Italian joints, the all-you-can-eat Samoa Cookhouse and even the tremendously upscale 301 restaurant at the Carter House.
