Tips on Keeping a Healthy Home for Asthmatics

The dreaded ritual of cleaning is done by the majority of us. Depending on who lives at your household and where you live, cleaning can be a daily must-do or on an as needed basis. I currently am renting a termite infested mobile home living with a child that is severely allergic to dust mites. The odds are stacked up against my favor of cleaning on a as needed basis. But I have developed a routine and even purchased a few products to help simplify my cleaning ritual and make my home more healthy for my son.

1. Daily cleaning- this includes washing the dishes, wiping down counter tops, picking up macro debris of the floor. By simply picking up clothes or other objects and making your bed, you will be impressed how doing little can appear to be so much.

2. Weekly cleaning- if you have allergies or asthma, then vacuuming and dusting is a must. Use a vacuum that has a HEPA filter that can go from carpet to bare floor. Sweeping is the best way get allergens back air borne, causing misery to you and others who live with you. This also applies to dusting. If you can't vacuum it, then use a dust attracting cloth.

3. Monthly cleaning- change your air filter. Again, use a HEPA or one with a small pore size to keep dust and dirt from blowing back into your home. Tear down cobwebs from ceilings and corners, this is just another place for dust to collect.

4. Six- months or yearly cleaning- clean window seals, you will be surprised how much dirt and dust can pile on them. Take all fake plants and window blinds out side and pressure spray them with a water hose. Wash all curtains and use a steam cleaner on the carpets. You don't have to use the carpet shampoo, Lysol or any other cleaner will work just as well.
