Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a Victorian village in the Ozark mountains that has been home to hundreds of artists, artisans, and fine craftsmen since the late 19th century, has a reputation for creative, extravagant celebrations. Almost any occasion is an excuse for a parade and a party in Eureka Springs, so when Hurricane Katrina transplant Dan Ellis decided to create an authentic, New Orleans-style Mardi Gras celebration, his proposal was enthusiastically received. Now in its sixth year, "Eureka Gras" 2011 boasts a line-up of activities to satisfy even the most enthusiastic Mardi Gras fan.
The 2011 festivities began with the introduction of the Royal Court on January 8, 2010, with the Kings Day Kick-Off.
On Saturday, February 5, beginning at 3:00 p.m., Sponsor Appreciation Day at the Rowdy Beaver Restaurant on Highway 62 West will feature the "Christening of the Floats," a cash bar, live entertainment and dancing, and Second Lining.
On Saturday, February 26, Lovin' Oven Bakeria (121 E. Van Buren) presents "Taste of New OrleansDay" from 1:00-3:00. Beignets and cafe au lait will be served, and there will be an opportunity for Second Line strutting.
Mardi Gras festivities get geared up in earnest at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, with the Hookers and Jokers Ball at the Inn of the Ozarks on Hwy. 62 West. Revelers may dress out in their choice of costume themes: Hookers, Jokers, or Alice in Wonderland. "All That Jazz Quartet" will provide live music, and there will be a costume contest and cash bar. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Reservations are limited, and may be obtained by calling 479-253-7788.
