How to Manage and Clean Up Pet Odor - Cats and Dogs!

Part of eliminating cat, dog and pet odor is prevention. One easy way you can prevent a large amount of cat, dog and pet odor is to establish a regular sleeping area for your cat or dog. A permanent sleeping area sets a regular routine and your pet will feel secure knowing that the same thing is happening each day and night. For dogs, crate training is the easiest way to housebreak a dog and keep urine and other odors to a minimum. A dog or cat will not want to potty where he or she sleeps. For cats, you can establish a room for them to sleep in at night. However, this needs to be done from kitten age to be most successful. In my house the laundry room is the cat sleeping area at night. This prevents the cat from scratching furniture and carpets at night and keeps the cat in one area where there is food, water and a litter box. This also helps prevent midnight cat "freak-outs". If you have cats, you know what I mean.

Keep your cat or dog or pet's bedding clean. I use older bath towels for my pets to sleep on because they are easy to put in the wash. A little vinegar in your wash or rinse cycle will help to neutralize pet urine and other odors.
Also, keep your pet well groomed. This is especially important for your long-haired pets.

If your cat or dog has an abnormally strong body odor that does not go away when the dog or cat is brushed and cleaned, you may need to take the animal to a veterinarian. A skin disorder called Seborrhea, an ear infection, or in dogs impaction of the anal glands can all cause a bad body odor in pets. Signs of a glandular infection include, scooting dogs and biting or licking the rear end excessively.

Bad breath, or also called Halitosis is caused by deposits on the teeth. Prevention is the best cure so give your dog a rawhide bone to chew on. Cats should have a crunchy food to chew on occasionally. You can use regular baking soda to brush your pets teeth. This works and is safe on cats and dogs. You can use a soft bristled brush or some medical gauze wrapped around your finger. Rub gently along the teeth and gum lines with a baking soda and salt mixture or just baking soda.
