How to Fix Carpet Burns

Carpet burns are a problem for indoor smokers and for rooms with fireplaces near an open carpet. Carpet burns are unsightly, unattractive, and an overall nuisance, but they can be removed with some work. This article will look at how to remove carpet burns and make your carpet look brand new with these simple DIY project steps.

Materials needed:

• Resolve- This carpet-cleaning product can be purchased at most home improvement and hardware stores.

• Carpet cleaner machine- Carpet cleaners are heavy-duty carpet cleaning machines that can be rented at some hardware stores. This option can become expensive, but it will help the overall project significantly.

• Steel wool

• Scissors

• Utility knife

• Gorilla glue

• Replacement carpet

Directions on how to remove carpet burns

1. The first step is to cut all the charred carpet fibers using the scissors. If the burns are severe you can use steel wool to loosen up the burns, or you can use warm water with soap.

2. Once the charred fibers are removed, you will want to use steel wool to loosen up the burns that could not be cut out. If your carpet is flat then you will not be able to cut out the burned carpet fibers; therefore, you will want to scrub the area with a warm water and soap mixture, then use the steel wool to loosen up the burned carpet.

3. Proceed to use either the resolve cleaning solution or a heavy-duty carpet cleaner machine to remove the burn stains. If the burns are light then they will easily be removed with the carpet cleaner, but if the burns are bad proceed to the next step.

4. Cutting the carpet

If the burns are not easily removed by the steel wool and cleaning solutions then you will have to remove the burned area of carpet in order to repair it.

• Locate a square of carpet that is close to the size of the burn, which can be found in inconspicuous areas, or can be purchased at a carpet store. You will want to make sure that the replacement carpet square is the exact same carpet that you are repairing.
