How Pet Owners Can Keep Their Homes Odor Free

Animals that live in cages, such as rodents and reptiles, tend to be quite smelly if the cages are not kept up regularly. These are not usually good choices for children's pets, unless you don't mind cleaning it up yourself or you have a child that is above average in the area of responsibility. Cages should be cleaned at least a couple of times per week, with fresh bedding placed inside and the cage itself cleaned with a non-toxic cleaner, as well.

*The Pet Itself

Just as people need to be cleaned, so do your pets, thankfully not as often! Using a shampoo that is specially formulated for your particular breed of pet, give your pet baths regularly. Keeping your pet clean will help tremendously in keeping the areas that your pet is in smelling clean, as well.

*Potty Areas

If your pet is of a variety that uses a litter box, potty pads, or some other method of indoor relief, these will be a must-clean area every day. There are few things that will spread through your home the way that potty odor from a pet will. Keeping these items clean daily is essential if you don't want your home to smell like pets.

*Battery-Operated Sprays

Glade, Airwick, and Febreze all make products now that you can set on a stand or hang on your wall which are run on batteries and can be set to spray out a burst of scent at time intervals that you select. There are varieties of scents that come in cans which you insert in the housing unit.

*Candles

Scented candles are wonderful ways to add some lovely smells to your home. The flame will also clean your air naturally. Candles come in a wide variety of scents and they can also be very decorative.

*Plants

Houseplants are another way to naturally freshen the air in your home. Although they don't remove pet odors specifically, they do keep your air clean.

*Air Purifiers

Air purifiers will work to remove bad odors from your home and replace them with fresh, clean air. Be sure if you use one of these products that you keep the filtering system clean and running well or you will only be recirculating the stale and odored air that you have back into your home.

*Baking Soda

Baking soda is an amazing and inexpensive way to eliminate odors from your home. Sprinkle some on your carpets and let it sit for about ten minutes prior to vaccuuming. This will absorb any pet odors that are lingering there between shampoos. You may also want to sprinkle some at the bottom of cages, litter boxes, and other areas that it would be useful.
