One of the biggest problems with the urine smell from pets is that once they have done their business on a particular piece of carpet or other floor surface area, they tend to keep returning to the same spot. With animals, scent means a lot. They will sniff around for the odor, and it is the odor that draws them back to use a place again and again.
The scent increases with each application and literally calls them to return repeatedly. Normal cleaners and detergents can do a pretty fair job if a spot is cleaned immediately, but there is always a lingering bit of aroma. You may not be able to smell it, but the pet can.
Common household baking soda works well as an odor absorber and cleaning agent for almost all household cleaning. The problem with pet odors is, if the animal has access to the area before all the smell is gone, the animal will go there again. So keep the animals away from the area you are trying to eliminate the odor from.
Another old-fashioned remedy for removing odors is to use slices of apple. The apple absorbs odor and also releases a pleasant aroma of its own that helps mask the offensive smell. Apple slices work well to get fishy odors out of ice chests too.
Lemons and their juice are another natural article that is common around a household. Lemon peel and juice can work wonders on a number of offensive odors. Lemon juice rinses work well in cleaning and deodorizing. Lemon peel can be used to help remove odors from a garbage disposal. It is best to pack the garbage disposal with ice cubes first and run them through without turning on the water. Then place the peelings from a few lemons in and turn the disposal on for about 60 seconds. Then run water through the disposal for a minute or two.
