5 Best Pet Stain and Odor Removers

Ask 10 pet lovers about the five best pet stain and odor removers, and you most likely get a plethora of responses. What works on pet urine stains frequently does not work on pet vomit stains and vice versa. That being said, there is help.

Enzyme Cleaner

Spray an enzyme digestant on the spot. Remove the excess organic matter, blot the stain dry (without rubbing) with an absorbent paper towel and spray on enzyme digestant. Remember that enzymes need a bit of time to work, so be patient. Additionally, enzyme cleaners do not work if there is heavy residue of other commercial cleaners in the carpet fibers.

Clean Up Pet Urine Stains with Ammonia

Clean Home NC suggests wetting the pet urine stains with a mix of two tablespoons ammonia and one cup of water. Blot it dry, spray clear water on the stain, spread a thick towel over it and weigh it down with something heavy to soak up any remaining moisture.

Rubbing Alcohol Fights Cat Pee

Resist the urge to use warm water when cleaning up cat urine. Because of cat pee's acid content, heat actually leads to crystallization, which in turn makes it part of the carpet. Wal-Mart suggests using straight, room temperature (or cool) rubbing alcohol that might be able to kill any bacteria and make quick work of the smell.

Salt Cleans Up Pet Vomit Stains

The Kitchn suggests sprinkling salt over pet vomit stains. It draws out the discoloring agents - especially the bile associated with cat puke - and makes the mess easier to clean up. Remove the solids, sprinkle salt on the stain, wait for a bit and then blot up with a dry paper towel. Spray clear water on the stain and continue blotting as needed.

When All Else Fails ... Commercial Pet Stain and Odor Remover

Spot-Shot by the WD-40 Company makes pet urine stains disappear and takes the stench out of pet vomit. Stains may require repeat cleanings, especially if they are not first time occurrences but instead point to a habitual soiling problem.
