The Use of Steam Cleaner and Other Cleaning Gadgets

Steam cleaners generate super heated steam to clean all hard surfaces: ovens, cookers, carpets, upholstery, and even windows. They require no chemicals - the steam is what removes the dirt.

Typically, steam cleaners are supplied with a large brush for carpets and floors, a smaller brush for upholstery and tiles, a narrow steam jet, extension tubes, cleaning cloths, and a window cleaner.A switch on the handle releases the steam. The idea is to direct the jet at whatever is being cleaned. The steam loosens the dirt, which can then be wiped off with a cloth.

Steam cleaners are particularly useful in bathrooms and kitchens, because the heat loosens grease and other ground-in dirt, including tricky problems like spatters on baths and basins.

They can also be used for carpets and upholstery, but it is rather a slow process and the results can be variable. Really filthy carpets should be professionally cleaned, and the steam cleaner can then be used once a month to ensure they do not become filthy again.

Other Cleaning Gadgets

The following are not strictly necessary or fall into the class of luxury, but are worth considering:

1. Central Vacuum Systems

A vacuum unit is installed in a garage or similar and hidden pipes lead from it to each room in the house, where there is an inlet hole. A vacuum hose is attached to the inlet hole and the dust is sucked straight out of the house and into the vacuum unit. These systems are very efficient and nest, and because dust is taken straight out of the house, they are good for asthma sufferers. But they are expensive and cannot be installed in houses without stud walls.

2. Handheld Vacuums

These small handheld cleaners are useful for dealing with spills in the kitchen, for vacuuming the interior of the car, or for doing the stairs if you cannot manage a full-size cleaner. They do not have a large capacity and tend to be very noisy.

3. Hard Floor Cleaners
