Helpful Cleaning Tips for Maintaining Rugs

Rugs are used in almost every capacity in a home and it is hard to find any home that doesn't use a rug here and there. Rugs have many uses with a home such as at an entrance to wipe the feet when coming hardwood floor, in front of the kitchen sink or in a bathroom. Rugs can be inexpensive or very pricey depending on the construction of them. It is therefore important that you know not only the best way to clean them properly but that you are able to try and preserve their life for as long as possible. Here are just a few tips that maybe helpful when cleaning and maintaining your rugs.

Beating your rugs can cause the threads to loosen and damage to the rug backing may happen. It is therefore important that you shake out as much as possible lightly and try to care for your rugs as you would a carpet.

Cheaper rugs, small throw rugs are made to be washed but you should check care instructions always to make sure on washing instructions. Overtime these rugs will start to come apart; it is best to limit washing for when they are dirty and to replace them after they start to fall apart.

Vacuum rugs as needed but this too should be done carefully; if the rug has any fringe make sure you don't vacuum the fringe as it will most likely damage it.

It is not advisable to use carpet spray cleaners or shampoos on rugs; however most care instructions will give you details on cleaning instructions. Carpet cleaners if not properly rinsed out can build up on rugs as in carpets and end up sticky and by in large attracts even more dirt. If you do decide to use a cleaner it is best to spot clean and make sure you go over the area thoroughly so as to get any residue that maybe left.

It is also important when using any type of cleaning agent that you test the carpet first for color bleeding; some oriental rugs and high color content do not take well to cleaning agents and may discolor easily or bleed.
