Some of these include:

Using rags for blotting spills. Get to the spill immediately, don't allow it to sit for any stretch of time. Then use a white or light colored rag to blot it away, don't rub.

Allow the baking soda to sit for fifteen minutes. Then, gently vacuum up the baking soda. This method is based for commercial grade low raise carpet, shaggier may be more difficult.

For light cleaning, use vinegar. Take two tablespoons of white distilled vinegar and mix with ¼ cup salt or baking soda until it is in a smooth paste. Rub the mixture into the carpet stain and allow it to dry. After it has sat and dried for a period of 24 hours, simply vacuum it up. Be sure to spot test on a piece of carpet hidden from view to be sure there's no discoloration or bleaching.

Another green carpet cleaning recipe for light cleaning, is to mix ¼ cup vegetable oil-based liquid soap with three tablespoons water. Mix these ingredients into a foamy consistency. Immediately rub into problem are while still foaming. Using clear water and rags to blot, rinse well.
