How to Make Your Home More Green with Eco-Friendly Home Appliances

Last year my husband and I decided that we wanted to replace most of the appliances in our home one by one. We have been in our home now for 18 years and most of the appliances came with the house, but we have had great fortune and luck with them not breaking down. However, with appliances that old, they really did not function well and were not eco-friendly. We are committed torecycling and preserving our natural resources so we knew that any appliances we purchased would be energy efficient and good for the environment. This was one of the steps we had decided to take in making our home a greener house.

We first needed to do a little research on what made an appliance "green". Typically, a green appliance means that it is an eco-friendly appliance, which in turn means that it is an energy saving appliance that causes less pollution to operate. I did the majority of my research on Mother Earth News. The article Great Green Appliances by Greg Pahl (December/January 2003) provided a wealth of knowledge about major appliances. He provided what to look for when shopping for water heaters washer and dryers. The information was an asset when we began to look for brands that would meet our requirements. Two other valuable resources for my research was the U. S. Department of Energy's website Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. They have a consumer guide to making your home greener. In addition, their Energy Starprogram gives you clear-cut information and ratings on major appliances so that you can choose appliances that are green and eco-friendly for your home.
