Keeping Your Home Smelling Fresh Despite Indoor Pets

If you live with indoor pets, chances are others can tell by the smell. You may not know the pet odor is there, but that doesn't mean it's not. I never realized that you could tell that I had pets in my home, until I had a very honest friend tell me that, although my house didn't 'stink' it, did smell like animals lived in it. I was very embarrassed by this, it didn't even help when she kept saying, "it doesn't stink, don't worry. All I'm saying is that you can tell you have pets." I don't want someone to know that I have pets in my home because of the smell! That was the moment that I began my search for items that would help my home smell pet free. I'm pleased to say that people now comment on the fact that they didn't know I had pets because my home smells so good. I have had several pet owners ask me how I maintain a fresh smelling home with two inside dogs and two inside cats. This is what I do:

Bath and shave the dogs: I have two Border Collies and even though they are inside it seems like every stink from the yard clings to them. I bath them twice a month. I have found that long hair promotes stink more than short hair. I shave them down, so their hair is about an inch long. I also don't have a problem with the long, smelly hair shedding all over the carpet this way. They are also easier to brush out with the one inch hair.

Find that magical cat litter: I had to go through about five different brands of cat litter before I found a brand that didn't make my bathroom smell like cat box. Everyone will tell you different brands, I think the best thing is to keep trying different brands until you find the one that works for you. We scoop our box in the morning and in the late afternoon, we change the litter completely and wash the cat box twice a week.
