Save Energy and Money: Buy Energy Star Appliances

If you want to live greener, save money and boost your modern convenience level, consider upgrading your home appliances. Switching out even one of your older, energy-sucking appliances for a newer, more efficient one can make a big impact on the planet and your energy bills.

The Energy Star web site as a whole is a great resource when shopping around for new appliances, and can help you determine just how green you can go for the amount of green you're willing to spend. Typically, the highest efficiency models are also the higher end models. Along with your energy savings, you may see nifty features such as washing machines using steam cleaning technology, dryers that can dry a whole load of clothes in under twenty minutes, or a dishwasher that has racks you can arrange to suit the size of the items being washed.

These bells and whistles, along with the excellent Energy Star ratings, help justify the higher price tag. However, for those on a tight budget, rest easy. There are many models available that are not quite as extravagant, but still stack up well in the savings and eco-friendly department. All refrigerators with an Energy Star rating, not just the expensive ones, consume a minimum of 20% less energy than current federal standards. The Kenmore 20.6 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator is a good choice. Energy Star rated, this model has shelves that slide out for easy cleaning, as well as adjustable bins for produce and meat. Top-loading freezers are more energy efficient, but will not provide an ice maker. You can find this item for under $1000 at Sears.com.
