Understanding Upholstery Cleaning Codes

Have you ever wondered if you are cleaning your upholstered furniture properly? Should you clean it with water or solvents? Or does it need to be professionally cleaned? Wonder no longer! will tell you exactly how it should be cleaned. In this article, we'll discuss the various upholstery cleaning codes, where to find upholstery cleaning codes, and what each one means.

Where to find upholstery codes -

Regardless of the manufacturer, all upholstery should be marked with an upholstery code. You'll find the upholstery code either under the seat cushion or on the actual seat itself. The code is shown in the form of a letter, which could be either a 'W', 'S', 'S/W' or 'X'. Go ahead, walk over and find the upholstery code on your furniture. (You know you want to) I'll wait.

Did you see one? If you weren't able to locate an upholstery cleaning code on either the seat cushion or the actual seat itself, you can try checking any tags that remain on the furniture.

Understanding upholstery cleaning codes -

Now that you have found the upholstery code, what does it mean? Each letter means something different, so before you attempt cleaning your upholstered furniture, take a moment to find out what each one means.

W

If you have found a 'W' on your furniture, CONGRATULATIONS! That is exactly what most of us want to see. It means that your furniture can be cleaned with water. Whew!

S

If you find the letter 'S' on your furniture, please accept my sympathies. This means that (brace yourself) it must be dry-cleaned. The letter 'S' stands for solvents, which is something you should not handle on your own. You absolutely, positively cannot use water or water-based products to clean your furniture. Sorry.
