Spring Cleaning Tips for Green Living

Spring is fast approaching and soon it will be time to start the dreaded spring-cleaning. Of late, there has been much talk about GREEN products and not to be left out are Green products for household cleaning. Long before companies started touting the Green logo, the use of natural cleaners was the norm. Then one day, along came the chemical cleaners and people traded safe and effective for ease of use, and good
advertising.Now a change has started and if you are like many people today, using products that are good for the environment and safe for your family is important to you.

Here are some simple GREEN ideas for spring-cleaning.

LEMON JUICE: Cuts grease and removes perspiration and stains from clothing. Works great to clean your microwave oven. Combine 2 tbsp. of lemon juice with 2 cups of water, microwave for 5 minutes and wipe clean.

CORNSTARCH: Starches clothes and absorbs odors. For the entry closet, sprinkles some in your shoes to freshen them.

BAKING SODA: An all-purpose cleaner. Cleans, deodorizes, removes stains, and softens fabrics. Set a box in a stale smelling closet or refrigerator.

VINEGAR: Cuts grease and It can be used to remove mild lime and soap scum in tubs. Cleans your automatic drip coffee pots.

WASHING SODA, (not to be confused with baking soda) also known as sodium carbonate, cleans clothes, softens water, cuts grease, and disinfects. But best of all it increases the cleaning power of soap.

How to mix All Purpose Cleaner.

3/4 tsp. washing soda, 3 tbsp. vinegar, 3/4 tsp. vegetable oil based liquid soap, 2 cups hot water. Mix in spray bottle or bucket. Apply and wipe clean.

To clean stainless steel and chrome fixtures, dissolve 2 tbsp. baking soda in 1 qt. of water. Wipe on and rinse. For hard lime deposits around faucets use a vinegar-soaked paper towel. Leave the paper towel wrapped around the fixtures for about an hour before cleaning.

A Non-Streak Glass Cleaner.

1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 1/4 tbsp. cornstarch, 1 qt. warm water.

Mix the ingredients and apply with a sponge or pour into spray bottle. Wipe dry with crumpled newspaper, buff to a shine.
