Guide to Cleaning a Laminate Wood Floor

You love your laminate wood floor and want to keep it in the best condition possible. To start try to wear your shoes, or other outdoor footwear as little in the house as possible. Please note that you do not want to use ammonia or steam cleaners on your laminate wood floor. Ammonia is known to wear away wax, and you do not want your wax worn away. Also, do not use any cleaner that has vegetable oil in it. The oil leaves a residue on your floors and that is not the look are you trying to achieve.

What you will need

Vacuum or broom and dust pan

Mop/Towel

Gallon of water

½ cup vinegar

First start by vacuuming the floor or if you choose you can sweep your floor and use the dust pan to throw the dust and dirt away.

Now if you find your mop leaves excess water, then you will either want to buy a new mop, or use a towel that you can ring out better. Excess water can sink in the cracks and overtime ruin the laminate wood flooring.

Mix half a cup vinegar in one gallon of water then use your mop or towel to dip in the water, ring it out and mop your floor. You will want to use a dry towel now to ensure your floor gets completely dry and there is not water left sitting.

Remember that moving furniture can damage the flooring, so keep some floor protectors under the heavy furniture that you might move. If you spill anything on your floor, you should immediately wipe it up so it doesn't sink in and cause damage. Do not wear your shoes or any outdoor footwear in the house to prevent anything from staining your floor. Consider putting down throw rugs in high traffic areas, and welcome mats in front of your doors.

Laminate wood floors are not meant to be waxed. Do not use harsh chemical cleaning products just because you believe they work better at cleaning. The chemicals can damage your floor.

To take care of your laminate wood flooring, start of by trying to prevent any damage to it. Make sure it is regularly cleaned and do not let spills sit, clean them up right away. If there is a stain, please contact the manufacturer to see what is recommended for removing stains from their products.
