Keeping down the smell of pets in a house can be a bit of a challenge, especially during those winter months when the animals are kept indoors. Pets are naturally aromatic, and odors that cling to their coats will transfer to the carpet, furnishings, and even the air. Over time, those odors will cause a house to smell.... pet deodorizer .

Because ours is a 4-H family, we've always owned a large menagerie of pets. To keep our house from smelling like a barnyard, we've learned a few tricks over the years for controlling pet odor.

Regular baths

If your pet spends even part of his time indoors, regular bathing is a must. Pets pick up smelly odors from their food, their excrement, brushing up against smelly garbage, or rolling in something nasty. There's really no "one size fits all" approach when it comes to bathing your dogs, cats, rabbits, or other pets. Frequent grooming

The pet hair that sheds off an animal can also to contribute to odors in the house. Regular grooming and hair brushing will reduce the amount of pet hair that clings to carpets and furniture.

Clean bedding

We used old blankets and towels as bedding for our dog, cat, and rabbits. Bedding can begin to smell in as little as two days and should laundered often. I wash pet bedding in hot water and line dry in the sun to disinfect and remove smells. If line drying isn't an option, try adding a cup of baking soda or Mule Team Borax to remove the odor causing bacteria.

Clean cages

For pocket pets, such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, birds, and small reptiles, cages should also be cleaned on a regular basis. Our indoor rabbit cages are cleaned every other day, with the smaller animal cages getting cleaned twice a week.
