Spit-Up Stain Removal Tips

With three children, I've seen my fair share of spit-up. While some (usually from my breastfed children) has been relatively easy to launder and remove, some has been stubborn and warranted tougher treatment methods. Here's how you can get a grip on those stubborn spit-up stains.

Don't wait to treat the stain.

With a baby, the last thing on your mind is going to be treating stains. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get a spit-up stain out. So, if nothing else, remove the excess spit up and pat the stain with cold water as soon as it happens. If you can change clothes and treat a stain on your or your baby's clothing immediately, you are more likely to get the stain out.

Apply baking powder and club soda.

This tried and true stain-removal method is the best one I've seen for removing baby spit-up stains. Sprinkle the stain with baking powder. Then, pour some club soda over the stain. Allow the mixture to fizz and work its stain-removing magic.

Wash without drying.

After you've used the baking powder/club soda mixture, you want to wash the clothing as you normally would. After the wash cycle, remove the clothing to examine the stain before you proceed to the dryer. Repeat the process if the stain remains, or consider another method of stain removal.

Try the sun on stubborn spit-up stains.

I've often used this trick to help alleviate cloth diaper stains, but it works well with spit-up on white clothes, too. Place the garment outside on a sunny day and the sun can help bleach the spit up and return the item to its once normal splendor.

By acting fast, using baking powder and club soda, washing and giving the sun a chance, you can remove spit-up stains from clothing with ease.
