He suggests mixing a quart of hydrogen peroxide with a quarter cup of baking soda and two teaspoons of liquid soap in a plastic bucket. Wash the dog or cat with the solution right away - for obvious reasons, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide do not store well - but be aware that injuries to the skin that come in contact with the mix will sting quite a bit. Rinse and repeat as often as needed to get rid of the oily secretions.

Febreeze.

Febreeze is supposed to be an effective odor eliminator, even on pet odor. However, when I tried Febreeze, the pet odors were merely masked, not eliminated. My pet odor problem remained.

Woolite Carpet Cleaner.

The carpet cleaner that I finally found to be adept at removing pet stains from my carpet was Woolite Oxy Deep Pet. This Woolite carpet cleaner was effective on pet odor removal and the pet stains on my carpet were gone! Woolite offers two powerful cleaners that go to work directly on the pet stain on your carpet, and works hard on pet odor removal.

Unlike Resolve, Woolite carpet cleaner worked on older pet stains on the carpet, as well as removing the entire pet odor. Before I found Woolite, guests who walked in my door smelled nothing but pet odor! Since my success at pet odor removal with Woolite, the terrible pet odor is gone!

The answer from some people would be "get rid of the cat(s)!!!" That is NOT an option for me, so what to do?

Not only do we have our personal cats, but we have our fosters. Cats are always coming and going in our home.
Accidents happen. No one enjoys the aroma of cat urine. We have tried just about everything there is. Believe me, we have. We have tried the enzyme removers from pet stores. We have tried vinegar and baking soda. We have tried hydrogen peroxide. We have tried Lysol, and Febreeze. We have tried every advertised urine smell remover we have seen. Every scent-- we do know cats do not enjoy citrusy scents.

There are only two which work--- and by work--- I mean they WORK!!!!!

Odoban is sold in gallon containers at Sam's Clubs and 32 ounce spray bottles in Wal Mart and O'Reilly Auto Parts Stores. This is a non toxic cleanser with a light eucalyptus scent. Spray it on the allotted area-enough to fully saturate it and let it sit for thirty minutes.

Then vacuum the carpet or rugs.

This one is our preferred cleaner as it is non toxic, and inexpensive ($10.00 a gallon). But to be honest we have had to re-spot the area to thoroughly eliminate lingering odors.

The other cleaner we LOVE but it is not inexpensive is URINE-OFF ($45.00 a gallon or 15.00 for a 32 ounce spray bottle). It can be found in specialty stores, vet's offices and on line. You might have even seen it advertised on television. It comes with a black light- but if you have a nose--- and it works-then you do not really need the black light to let you know where the urine is "hiding". This cleaner works the same as ODOBAN and works the first time.

If your cat is urinating just outside the litter box- he or she might be trying to tell you something is wrong --- a trip to the veterinarian would be a safe call.

If you have the rugs lined with plastic underneath, my advice is to replace them. Cats gravitate towards plastic the same as they do litter boxes. What is a litter box made out of anyway-plastic. To them, they are not committing any grievous sin by urinating on a bath mat.

Review of Carbona Pet Stain Carpet Cleaner/Odor Remover

We have a six year old Silky Terrier, and occasionally she will have an accident if we leave her for too long by herself. Believe me, I have tried a ton of products claiming to remove stains and odors, but this one actually lives up to its name.

The cleaner comes in a plastic yellow bottle, with an applicator top, that holds 22 fluid ounces. I was lucky and found a 27.5 ounce value size for the same amount. The applicator top consists of a foam center surrounded with brush like bristles. As you squeeze the liquid out, it moves through the foam/brush applicator and procuces a nice amount of cleaning foam. There is no need for additonal brushes or rags, the applicator does a perfect job of spreading the foam and allows you to work it into the carpet. It really is one step cleaning, and if I have to clean, that's my favorite kind! The solution penetrates into the carpeting, breaking down stains and odors. You needn't saturate the carpeting or get it overly wet, as the foam does all the work!

The directions say to allow the foam to remain on the spot for 3 minutes, then you an wipe the area dry with a clean cloth. Letting the product sit directly on the spot will allow the patented odor remover to neutralize the odors.

Now there are actually Pet Plug-ins that are advertised and marketed specifically toward making the area of the house where your pet stays most of the time smell cleaner! I have never personally tried one of these pet plug-ins, but imagine that it would work just as well as the normal plug-ins. I don't know if I would care to pay a more hefty price for a pet plug-in, however, buying one once or twice to test it out may not be so bad if it actually does work!

Pet Stain Removers Compared

I like a nice home. I like nice decor. Pee pee pads were not something I had planned as floor covering but at this point that's my "look:" I guss you could call it "shabby pee". I certainly haven't seen anything like it in Martha's Living magazine.

I have two Chihuahuas. One is housebroken, the other is sporadic in his bathroom habits. I can take him out and when he comes in he'll go n the carpet. Why? Who knows. I've used Carbona Carpet Wizard, Resolve Carpet Cleaners, machines rented from Pathmark, Petzyme stain and odor remover, Rug doctor odor remover, Crystal All purpose cleaner,GG Bean Urine Clean, Turbo Carpet Shampoo and now Bissell pet and Stain Remover.

Carbona Carpet Wizard comes with an attached bristle/sponge head. According to the label it's the toughesst carpet and upholstery celaner available. It creates a foam that you leave on for 3 minutes. Carbona uses a formula with Oxygen to remove pet odors , bacteria & stains from your carpet . THey suggest that the Oxygen and removal of the bacteria will discourage repeated pet accidents. My dog isn't easily discouraged.

Resolve High Traffic Carpet Cleanng Granules eliminates the soggy carpet aspect and lets you walk on the carpet in less than an hour. You brush the granules into the carpet with the bruah that is attached to the dispender bottle. Wait 30 minutes and vacuum.

Turbo Shampoo by Electrolux is designed to be used with a carpet cleaning machine. For my needs I have to have someting I can bring out daily that doesn't involve a large machine.

Home remedies to remove pet stains use a combination of peroxide, vinegar and baking soda. Mix one part white vinegar to three parts water, saturate the area, allow it to sit for five minutes, then blot dry. Sprinkle the area with baking soda. Then add one teaspoon of a dish washing liquid to one cup of Peroxide and drizzle over the area. Use your fingers to work the Peroxide and baking soda into the carpeting and padding. Allow this to dry, then vacuum the powder and rinse with water.

Simple Green
Once I had a tenant leave two dogs locked in my house for a week. They made a very large, heavily soiled area. I called a company that specialized in removing pet stains. That left me with a faded stain, the same odor and a lighter wallet. Facing hundreds of dollars to replace the carpet, I saturated the area with an all purpose cleaner that I happened to have on hand called Simple Green. By the time I'd finished rinsing it out with my shampooer, both the stain and the odor were completely gone. I've used it several times since with good results on fresh stains. I've never had any other cleaner work as well.

As a long-time owner of several different cats, I was hoping I would never have to write a review on a urine-removal product. But, more than a decade into my cat-owning career, here I sit, to tell you a little (OK, about my experience with the ProKlean Leather Cleaner urine remover.
